New Rig

Looking around the world through the web pages that come up in a search for "single handed skiff" it is obvious that this type of boat is one who's time has come . The technology and knowledge available to modern sailors has made this sort of sailing a very viable proposition . That being said I do not think  that any one type of boat is going to be able to corner the market . It would be a pity if this type of sailing were to become "fringe" simply because individual sailors want to try different approaches and above all have a boat that suits their own particular size and weight . I for example am 50 years old , stand 165cm tall [5' 5"] and weigh in at a massive 60kg [130lb] . However I still wish to sail and be competitive in stronger winds . This requires a flexible and adjustable rig . I have spent the last season sailing and modifying the prototype  Bucko so that it fulfills those requirements but I am sure there are many improvements to be made . The next step should be for the various interested sailors and manufacturers to get together and draft up a set of parameters within which this type of boat can be developed .A set of suggested guidelines is given below .

  1. The boat must be launched and retrieved by the skipper alone to compete in any race .
  2. The courses should be short and designed to test efficiency as well as speed .
